Mom Needs A Filter

We are about 5 days into Will being sick. He has battled a fever for days with chills, icky nose, cough and yes at 4:30 am, terrible diarrhea.

So, at 8:15 this morning Will calls me asking for help on the toilet. Uh Oh. Poor kid had even worse diarrhea and didn't quite make it to the toilet, if you know what I mean.

On a plus side, his fever broke!

I had to pick up a prescription and I was so terribly anxious to get out the house for a bit so I packed Will up and took him with me. He has been doing a lot better since this morning.

In the course of 2 hours however, I ran into 4 friends and I told all of them the whole scenario of Will's terrible morning.

I really should have listened to the niggling in my head but of course, I ignored it. The niggling was telling me I should shut up because Will was with me and probably wouldn't appreciate my sharing his bathroom experience abroad.

Sure enough, we get back in the car and Will says, "Mom, why did you have to tell everyone you saw about the potty in my pants, it wasn't very appropriate."

Boy, I felt like a heel because he was so right! I profusely apologized. I failed to recognize the poor little guy was embarrassed. He is, after all, almost 7 years old!
I think my mind is still stuck back in time when our kids were babies and we would try and outdo each other with tales of blown out diapers or something.

The other thing that came to mind was why should I assume friends want to hear the saga of a regular bathroom visit gone very, very bad. I do need to remember details aren't always a good thing!

All this to say, I think my brain filter needs a serious adjustment. And Will, if you ever read this when you are grown up, I really am very sorry. I promise I won't tell your significant other about it, unless she reads this. If she does, then I'm sorry again.

  1. You crack me up and make my heart smile all at the same time. You might be the funniest person I know.
Oh and sorry that Will is sick.
