This Little Piggy Went To Market...

I went to market today and came home with all this!  Do you see the dozen homemade tamales in there?  Those won't last long, they are the best I have ever tasted.
Garlic, Green Beans, Tomatoes, Orange Flesh Honeydew Melon, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Shitake Mushrooms, Boysen/Straw/Marion berries, Yellow Cucumbers, Carrots
So, how do I use all my bounty? Well, I took part of my berry loot and made a mixed berry crisp...using  Boysenberries, Marionberries and Raspberries.  I wanted to make my topping a little healthier so I added flax, rolled oats and oat bran in addition to a smaller amount of brown sugar.  The berries speak volumes so you don't need to do much in terms of seasoning!  Just a bit of sugar, a little flour to thicken...
I will use my strawberries for snacking and the rest of the marionberries for Sunday morning scones at home.  I'm looking forward to a morning of yoga, scones and coffee ( have to replace the calories burned in the yoga :)

Compliments of Z-K Flowers
Gorgeous lillys and thank you to a very generous farmer for giving me a bouquet.  Little did she know they were part of my wedding day flowers.

I love these rustic crates Harpole's Produce puts together to hold their berries!

I am planning on grilling these green beans on the BBQ.  We have a grill tray designed for veggies and I love the smoky, kind of charred flavor they take on.  Some olive oil and sea salt make them even tastier!  Most likely I will grill all the other veggies as well.

I am planning on marinating the cucumbers and tomatoes to serve with Chicken Curry over couscous.
I love Patty's perrennials from Garden Thyme - so lovely.

Lane's End Dexters (Kol Chaney)
I love the guy that sells these Shitake mushrooms.  I will put these on the grill as well, like you would a Portabello mushroom.  By the way, Shitakes have a lot of protein so great alternative to meat.

Anyway, this farmer also raises and sells a lot of grass fed beef. Not only does he ranch, he also grows mushrooms and veggies to sell, he raises and harvests his own honey for market, he interned in Joseph, OR. with his mentor, he spent time in Ecuador, he plays bag pipes, he currently lives in a TeePee AND he reads Steinbeck and Faulkner for fun.  The guy is a memoir in the making.

If you can believe it I actually asked if he watched TV or movies.  He kind of gave me a blank stare and said, "I don't have electricity, I live in a TeePee."  Ooops!

  1. You live a fun life! I'm not sure I could live without electricity. How does he stay warm in the winter? Where does he go to the bathroom?

My rancher dude is a nomad so he doesn't know what he is going to do this winter - as for bathroom?? Not sure I want to know!

  4. Better late than never, This honey guy youre speaking of was my Tipi-mate.

He wintered in Portland going to school for metal fabrication.

We dug a hole in the ground, is the answer to the more utilitarian question.

Have a great year! I'm off to Alaska, Kol will be back in Silverton shortly. =)
